INEC CHAIRMAN, PROF AMUPITAN RISKS JAIL TERM— NNPP

BREAKING NEWS

INEC CHAIRMAN CONDUCT RISKS JAIL TERM AND FURTHER ADJUSTMENT OF ELECTION TIME TABLE — NNPP

The avoidable conduct of INEC in persistently disobeying court orders is likely to adversely affect the 2027 election timetable.

It is both unbelievable and disturbing that INEC—an institution led by a Professor of Law and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria—has become an embarrassment to the rule of law.

In a recent instance, the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory delivered a judgment compelling INEC, within 72 hours, to update its records, recognise the Dr. Agbo Major Gilbert-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), and file an affidavit of compliance.

Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN                      INEC Chairman

Three weeks thereafter, Professor Amupitan and his Commission have yet to comply, without any credible explanation.

What is evident is that time has been running against INEC from the day Honourable Justice Bello Kawu delivered the judgment. The Commission was duly served by the court bailiff, and proof of service is properly entered in the court record.

It therefore stands to reason that INEC must accord the NNPP adequate and equal time, like other political parties, to prepare for and participate in the 2027 elections. To the contrary, we have commenced contempt proceedings and shall pursue justice and equity to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

We therefore call the attention of the Federal Government of Nigeria and other critical stakeholders to urgently call INEC to order, so as to prevent any further distortion of the 2027 election timetable.

Lateef Fagbemi                            .                          Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation

We specifically call on the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation,  Lateef Fagbemi, and the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria, and the president of Nigeria Barr Association to investigate what is going on in INEC

The judiciary and the court must be seen to protect and guide it's jurisdiction jealously to preserve the integrity and authority of the courts, and to ensure that lawful orders are neither ignored nor undermined.

INEC’s present conduct constitutes an embarrassment to the rule of law, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and a clear threat to democracy.

We therefore join other well-meaning Nigerians in calling to order the INEC leaderships and a comprehensive overhaul of the Commission—particularly its legal department—to restore credibility and safeguard our democracy.

The conduct of the leadership of INEC at the moment is against the spirit and letters of renewed hope agenda of Mr President
