NNPP DISCLAIMS PURPORTED LETTER TO INEC FOR "NOTICE TO CONDUCT CONGRESS AND NATIONAL CONVENTION
The Chairman,
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),
Zambezi Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.
12th November, 2025.
Attention: Director, Legal.
Dear Sir,
RE: UNAUTHORIZED LETTER PURPORTING TO EMANATE FROM THE NEW NIGERIA PEOPLE'S PARTY (NNPP) -NOTICE TO CONDUCT CONGRESSES AND NATIONAL CONVENTION
We act as Solicitors to the authentic leadership of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) under the Chairmanship of Dr Agbo Major (hereinafter referred to as "our clients"), and have their firm instructions to write to your Commission in respect of the above subject matter.
Our clients have become aware that certain impostors purporting to be officials of the NNPP have addressed a letter dated October 31, 2025, to your Commission with the subiect "Notice to Conduct Ward, Local Government, State, and Zonal Congresses and National Convention to Elect New Executives for New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP)", purportedly signed by Dr. Ajuji Ahmed and Dipo Olayoku. The said letter alleges authority to convene congresses and a national convention.
We are instructed to make it clear that these individuals arè not officials of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) and have no legal standing whatsoever to speak for, represent, or act on behalf of the Party. They are mere meddlesome interlopers acting in brazen defiance of binding court judgments that have conclusively determined the question of the authentic leadership of the NNPP.
For the avoidance of doubt, the High Court of Abia State, in Suit No. HUZ/11/2024: Chukwunenye Uguru &3 Ors. v. NNPP &A nor, recognized and affirmed the authority of the Board of Trustees of the NNPP, led by Dr Boniface 0. Aniebonam, to conduct congresses and the National Convention of the Party. Pursuant to that lawful authority, the Board of Trustees validly organized and conducted the National Convention, which produced Dr Agbo Major as the National Chairman of the NNPP, together with other duly elected national officers.
This decision of the Abia State High Court was affirmed by the judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, delivered on 3rd April 2025, coram Hon. Justice M.A. Hassan, in Suit No. FCT/HC/Cv/5518/2024: NNPP & 20 Ors. v. Chief Dr. Boniface 0. Aniebonam & 20 Ors.
The Honourable Court unequivocally dismissed all adverse claims against our clients and thus implicitly reaffirmed the leadership of Dr Agbo and his executive committee as the lawful and authentic National Chairman of the Party.
Our clients are, therefore, the judgment creditors in these matters. It is pertinent to state that the action filed in the High Court of the F.C.T. by the impostors, having lost before the Abia High Court, sought to restrain the authentic leadership from conducting its lawful convention, but that application was dismissed in its entirety by Justice M.A. M/14318/2025: NNPP v. INEC & 17 Ors.
wherein:
1, our clients seek an Order of Mandamus compelling your Commission to comply with and give full effect to the said subsisting judgments. This matter remains pending, and the law is well settled that once a case is sub judice, all parties are bound to maintain the status quo and refrain from taking any step that may prejudice the proceedings or render the court's eventual decision nugatory.
Any action by your Commission recognizing or engaging with the said impostors in the face of these valid judgments and pending proceedings would amount to willful contempt of court, carrying grave legal consequences.
We are, however, reassured by the fact that the current Chairman of your Commission is a distinguished Professor of Law, an astute Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and a renowned academic, who fully appreciates the constitutional imperative of adherence to the rule of law and the grave implications of taking administrative steps during the pendency of judicial proceedings.
In view of the foregoing, we respectfully but firmly request that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should:
1. Reject and dis countenance any letter, correspondence, or purported notice issued by the said impostors or their agents;
2. Refrain from sending or deploying any INEC officials to monitor, engage with, or participate in any purported congresses or conventions organized by the said illegal group led by Dr. Ajuji Ahmed; and
3. Continue to recognize and deal exclusively with the authentic leadership of the NNPP under the Chairmanship of Dr. Agbo Major, pending the final determination of the judicial review proceedings before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.
This is the only lawful and proper course consistent with the dictates of the rule of law, the sanctity of judicial authority, and the integrity of the electoral process. Any contrary step by your Commission would not only undermine the authority of the courts but may also render the Commission and its officials liable to contempt proceedings.
Please accept the assurances of our highest regards.
Yours faithfully,
NDUBÚISí OKO UKPAI, Esq
