PRESIDENT TINUBU APPOINTS SENEGAL PRESIDENT AS SPECIAL MEDIATOR BETWEEN ECOWAS & MALI, BURKINA FASO & NIGER REPUBLIC

Tinubu Re-elected ECOWAS Chairman, Appoints Basiru Faye As Mediator With Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger.


President Bola Tinubu has appointed the President of Senegal Basiru Faye as the special mediator between ECOWAS and Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic.

Tinubu was first elected in July 2023 in Guinea- Bissau and re-elected at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government on Sunday in Abuja.

In his acceptance speech after his re-election, the Nigerian president said his leadership will continue to strengthen democracy among member nations of the West African bloc.

Tinubu’s first stint as the ECOWAS chair was characterised by coups in the region. Military juntas have taken over power in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic. While the regional bloc imposed sanctions on the countries, these nations left the body and vowed not to return.

But in a move to resolve the crisis, President Tinubu after his re-election appointed the Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and the President of Togo Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé as Special Envoys to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic.

Earlier in his opening speech President Bola Tinubu called on Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS to work towards the establishment and sustenance of a regional standby force for the security and economic advancement of the community.

At the opening of the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government in Abuja, the President, who is the Chairman of the regional bloc, highlighted the expediency of a standby force in the face of growing security threats.

President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray had thanked President Tinubu for his purposeful leadership, affirming that ECOWAS should not be defined by conflicts, elections, and coup d’états, but by development.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu has called for support in re-electing Ambassador Bankole Adeoye as AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security in February 2025.
