Herdsmen Attack : Senate to Convene Security Summit
The Nigerian Senate at Tuesday’s plenary resolved to convene a national security summit in a bid to find lasting solutions to the nation’s pressing security challenges.
The summit will provide a platform for heads of security agencies, governors, traditional rulers, socio-cultural groups, alongside civil society organisations to deliberate and seek solutions to escalating insecurity across the country.
This was part of resolutions reached while deliberating on the killing of innocent citizens by alleged herdsmen in some parts of Kogi state.
Senator Isa Jibrin, representing Kogi East, drew the attention of his colleagues to the deadly attack in his constituent which lead to the loss of lives and properties.
Contributing to the debate, some Senators who aired their views, lamented that continuous killings like this brings a feeling of hopelessness that nothing is being done by those in authority.
Ruling on the motion of the killing of innocent citizens in some parts of Kogi East, President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio said the summit will be all encompassing.
The Upper Chamber consequently resolved to set up an adhoc committee comprising one Senator from each geo political zone to look at the matter holistically.
Senate however observed a minute silence in honour of those that were killed.
