LADIPO JOHNSON UNVEILS COMPREHENSIVE AGENDA FOR LAGOS CENTRAL SENATORIAL DISTRICT AT MEDIA PARLEY

Aspirant Promises People-Centred Representation, Accountability, and Practical Solutions to Constituency Challenges

In a robust media engagement session held in Lagos, senatorial aspirant for Lagos Central District, Bamofin Ladipo Johnson, outlined a detailed legislative and policy agenda anchored on five core pillars: People, Productivity, Infrastructure, Security, and Governance.

The media parley, which drew journalists from across the state, provided a platform for Johnson to articulate his vision for the constituency, respond to pressing societal concerns, and differentiating his approach from that of the incumbent leadership.

A Blueprint for Realistic Representation

Johnson presented what he described as a "practical agenda for representation, opportunity, and accountable government," emphasising that public office should focus on solving real problems rather than merely occupying a position.

"I have always believed that public office should be about solving real problems, not simply occupying a position," Johnson stated. "For Lagos Central, that means staying close to the everyday realities of the people: the young person looking for a first opportunity, the trader trying to keep a business alive, the family dealing with poor drainage or inadequate healthcare, and the community that wants to know that its elected representative is accessible and paying attention."

The aspirant was explicit about the constitutional limits of a Senator's office, promising not to overpromise or encroach on executive functions.

"My responsibility is to legislate, represent, provide oversight, participate in appropriation, raise constituency concerns and push institutions to deliver," he explained.

The Five Priority Agenda

1. People - Human Capital, Welfare, and Dignity

Johnson pledged to improve access to quality education, strengthen primary healthcare services, and support scholarships for young people. He also committed to giving attention to vulnerable residents, including those with disabilities, and addressing homelessness.

2. Productivity - From Consumption to Production

The aspirant emphasised supporting small and medium-sized businesses with better access to finance, skills, and markets. He highlighted Lagos Central's significant potential in the blue economy, including fisheries, aquaculture, and maritime logistics.

3. Infrastructure - Fix What People Depend On Every Day

Johnson prioritised drainage and flood reduction, community roads rehabilitation, water access, and urban environmental management. He stressed using oversight and public reporting to track projects, clearly distinguishing between advocating for projects and executing them.

4. Security - Safe Communities, Accountable Institutions

The agenda includes community-level prevention, improved coordination with security agencies, and addressing underlying conditions contributing to insecurity, such as unemployment.

5. Governance - Representation People Can Actually Reach

Johnson committed to regular constituency accountability sessions, maintaining clear communication channels, publishing public scorecards, and ensuring transparency in public spending.

Addressing Pressing Societal Issues

During the question-and-answer session, Johnson fielded inquiries on various critical matters:

Grassroots Development

Responding to questions about grassroots development, Johnson noted his track record as a former PDP candidate who has consistently worked with communities through pro bono services, healthcare assistance, and youth development programmes, including under-16 football tournaments.

Environmental Challenges on Lagos Islands

On environmental issues, particularly those affecting Lagos Island, Johnson advocated for a holistic approach addressing the lagoon and high water levels. He emphasised the need for reorientation towards cleanliness while acknowledging that waste management remains primarily a state government responsibility.

Youth Empowerment and ICT Initiatives

Johnson described poverty as "weaponised" and called for creating more avenues for productive jobs. Regarding ICT initiatives, he proposed redirecting skills currently used in cybercrime towards legitimate, profitable ventures, positioning Lagos as a global ICT innovation hub.

"We need to utilise our youth potentials towards development," Johnson asserted, adding that internships, apprenticeships, and youth support programmes would help direct young energy towards meaningful empowerment.

Law Enforcement and Corruption

The aspirant called for dismantling the "culture of impunity" that has deepened in Nigeria's system due to pervasive corruption. He stressed the need for reorientation and good leadership to combat corrupt practices.

Constituency Expectations vs. Incumbent Leadership

Johnson noted that constituents are clamouring for better representation, observing that the incumbent leadership has been insufficiently visible. He promised town hall meetings, media debates, and other public engagement platforms to ensure residents can express concerns and participate in development.

2027 Elections and Electoral Integrity

On the political landscape, Johnson affirmed that the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) is prepared to contest the 2027 elections, expressing confidence in wider coalition support than in the previous election. He emphasised that votes must count and warned against harassment, intimidation, and electoral malpractice.

State Policing

While acknowledging the state policing initiative as part of a broader security framework, Johnson criticised the APC administration for insufficient consultation with citizens regarding the proposal.

Waste Management

Johnson described waste management as a significant issue affecting public health and tourism. He called for collaborative approaches between federal ministries and state agencies to develop effective solutions.

Transparency and Accountability

Johnson's agenda emphasises measurable outcomes over rhetoric. He proposed a public scorecard to track his performance across key areas:

· People: Schools, primary healthcare centres, skills programmes, and scholarships

· Enterprise: SMEs supported, finance mobilised, jobs and income outcomes

· Infrastructure: Projects tracked by location, status, cost, and responsible agency

· Security: Inter-agency actions and response mechanisms

"My goal is not to make promises that sound impressive during an election period," he stated. "I want to build a record of representation that people can understand and evaluate. If a constituent raises an issue, there should be a way to follow it. If a project is proposed, there should be a way to track it. If legislation is important to Lagos Central, people should know why I supported it."
