UNMITIGATED CORRUPTION IN THE CUSTOMS PORTS IS WORRISOME-- NAGAFF
May we draw the attention of the leadership of the Gov Agencies in the Nigeria customs ports and borders to the avoidable corruption circumstances in our approved entry points.
It is our hope that the leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) , the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, the Nigeria Police Force- Maritime and NAFDAC in-paticular shall increase their supervisory roles with a view to stemming the tide
The concept of the renewed hope agenda of Mr President is predicated upon the principles of rule law and hardwork. It is therefore the belief of NAGAFF that industrial harmony and productivity of the Nigerian state shall be the tonic required to achieve objective.
Therefore the urgent need for the leadership of the various Agencies of the government assigned to the Nigeria entry points to work harder with a view to stemming the high level corruption at the Nigeria Customs Ports and borders can not be overemphasised
At the moment, most of the Nigeria bound cargos are being diverted to the neighbouring countries and thereby increasing smuggling activities and loss of revenue due to Government.
It is not a news any longer that our borders are porous to enhance free entry of goods and it's security implications.
We equally regret to note the docility of the Nigeria Shippers Councils to it's statutory responsibilities in checkmating the instances of non-availability of empty containers for export , debits of unapproved charges of the shipping companies and terminal operators abound.
It is so worrisome that the export capabilities of our nation is being undermined due to lack of empty containers, and thereby making our nation to loose a lot of revenue in foreign exchange.
These avoidable circumstances with emphasis on corruption are some of the remote causes making Nigeria ports uncompetitive and non -productive
It's on record and trite to note that the essence of port concession is to make Nigeria ports competitive but alas, the contrary is the case. With some of these circumstances the renewed hope agenda of Mr President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu may appear like building a castle on a shifting sand
Nagaff is always ready to assist the Government in ensuring that rule of law is observed in line with the constitutional provisions. This shall be the road map of building a peaceful and productive society
Nagaff may be constrained to make appropriate recommendations to Mr President from our strategic position against heads of Government and
their strategic officers that lack the capacity to drive the process of Mr President's intentions at the ports and borders.
We wonder whether the Director General of NAFDAC, Standards Organisation of Nigeria etc have ever visited the ports under the principles of public private partnership to engage stakeholders and ascertain the working condition of it's officers at the ports
Bashir Adewale Adeniyi Comptroller General of Customs
We thank the comptroller General of Customs who is always visiting us to know how we are fairing under the circumstances in the Nigerian ports
What is certain at the moment is that freight forwarding practitioners in the Customs Ports and Borders are tired of giving bribe to the Agencies of the government if we must contribute meaningfully to the renewed hope agenda of Mr President.
In a situation wherein government Agencies are Judges in their own case is in breach of natural justice. In due course we shall expand this assertion but for now, let's see what national single window model will bring to the table by 27th march 2026.
At the moment it is our thinking that pre arrival assessment notice (paar) of the Nigeria customs service is more of a fraud than value addition in trade facilitation going by the way it is being operated as a risk management tool
Dr C. C. Iwegbuna National Pub. Secretary, Nagaff Hqtrs.
